Why Traditional Publishing Is Becoming Less Viable (and Why Indie Is Rising)

Traditional publishing is not dead, but it is becoming less accessible. Indie publishing is no longer a fallback; it’s a deliberate, entrepreneurial path. The shift is here—will you step into it?

If you’ve ever dreamed of landing that traditional book deal, you may have noticed it’s getting harder than ever. Here’s the reality: the publishing world is changing fast, and for most of us, it’s not about wanting more control or being anti-tradition. It’s about finding the best path as the market evolves.

In my latest episode of Indie Author Blueprint, I unpack why the traditional route has become so tough—and why the indie path is looking better and better. The “Big Five” publishers are merging and consolidating, meaning there are fewer companies to submit to and even fewer slots for new books. Most of those get snapped up by established voices, celebrity memoirs, or household names we all recognize. As for the dream of a big juicy advance and marketing support? Those are rarities these days, especially for newer authors.

Going with the Opportunity Flow

The good news? The indie publishing world is booming with opportunity. Instead of waiting years for a gatekeeper’s approval, you can now get your book out to readers in a matter of weeks. Platforms like Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and Draft2Digital have made it easier than ever for writers like us to bring high-quality books straight to our audience. Plus, the ability to change things up—like covers or marketing approaches—lets us respond quickly and see results in real time.

I also get into how indie authors are building creative, multiple income streams—like audiobooks, subscriptions on Substack or Patreon, or even direct sales from your own website. Traditional publishing can’t always offer this level of flexibility, especially as things keep shifting.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

If you’re feeling stuck or discouraged trying to break into traditional publishing, you are not alone. This isn’t about giving up—it’s about adapting and taking advantage of all the new options available to writers today.
