Sometimes You Have to Pivot

Why Indie Authors Don’t Have to Accept a Bad Outcome

Every book project hits a moment when something isn’t working. Maybe the cover misses the mark, the editor’s style isn’t a fit, or the release date suddenly feels impossible. Traditional authors often have to live with those choices—but indie authors don’t. One of the greatest strengths of independent publishing is the freedom to pivot.

Pivoting isn’t failure.

In this episode, I talk about how indie authors can course-correct mid-project without panic, shame, or drama. You’ll learn how to recognize common red flags, when to adjust your timeline, how to rethink your marketing plan, and where you can professionally exit a working relationship if needed.

But freedom in publishing doesn’t mean carelessness. I also talk about the importance of kindness, fairness, and professionalism. You can bow out of a collaboration with respect—and you should. And just as authors can pivot from a contractor, editors and designers can also step away if they’re treated poorly or boundaries are ignored. Professionalism protects both your reputation and your book.

If you’re feeling stuck with a book that isn’t lining up the way you hoped, this is your reminder that you’re not trapped. Indie authorship gives you options. You’re the decision-maker. A pivot now is often the exact move that leads to a stronger book and a more confident launch later.
